Length Checks: Yay or Nay?

100th BLOG POST

It has been 3 months since I did my New Year/Hair Anniversary length check video and in honor of my 100th blog post, I decided to conduct a length check! To see what my measurements were in January you can click the link below:

Here's todays measurements:
Front: 9.5 inches
Left Side: 9.5 inches
Right Side: 9.5 inches
Top: 10 inches
Back: 9 inches

A few weeks ago I read an article about conducting a "proper" length check. I found the article to be quite helpful. Especially those that are newly natural and would like to efficiently document their journey. I read some the comments at the end of the article; some were praising the information and humor of the article while others were stating their opposition to length checks. The general point was that length checks are taken too seriously and people are too obsessed with growing long natural hair.

After reading these comments, I decided to chime in on the conversation. I stated that I understand how people can be very intense with hair care and length checks. Personally, I only do length checks on special occasions. An example used when referring to bloggers/vloggers documenting length checks was the use of measuring tape and I admitted that I am one of those bloggers/vloggers that uses measuring tape.

I do it because I don't like using points of reference to gauge my growth. If I wear my hair in a twist out versus and blown out style. I don't think I will get an accurate reading. Part of my personality is precision. My friends and family will tell you by the way my room looks that I am not a perfectionist but I do want things as close to perfect as possible by MY standards.

However, I am not obsessed with hair growth. I'm not taking hair growth supplements or hair vitamins. My hair is healthy on it's own. I don't want my hair to be "armpit" length or anything like that. I don't even have a hair growth goal but I have noticed that since I have been natural my hair has grown much longer than when I received relaxers. That excites me so I want that trend to continue.

I think it all comes down to how long one has been natural, reasoning for going natural, and natural hair goals. With that being said I raise the question...

Why are length checks so controversial?
